Let’s explore the syllabus overview of the standard CIA and Challenge path:
1. Updated CIA (Three-Part) Exam - Syllabus Overview
The new structure of the CIA Three-Part Exam syllabus, as of 28 May 2025, has:
Part 1: Internal Audit Fundamentals, covering foundations of internal auditing, ethics and professionalism, governance, risk management and control, and fraud risk, preparing you for real-world audit ethics and control frameworks.
Part 2: Internal Audit Engagement shifts focus to practical audit work: planning engagements, gathering and evaluating information, supervising engagements, and effective communication of findings - essential for hands-on internal audit roles.
Part 3: Internal Audit Function replaces the older “Business Knowledge” label, emphasizing internal audit operations, risk-based audit planning, quality assurance, monitoring and follow-up of audit outcomes, reflecting the evolving role of audit departments in modern firms.
For candidates, this means the three-part path now gives a more relevant, practical and globally accepted audit knowledge framework, blending fundamentals and practice in a structure tuned for 2025 and beyond.
CIA Challenge Exam - Syllabus Overview (As of Latest Update)
The CIA Challenge Exam continues to be a single, comprehensive exam designed for experienced professionals such as CA, CMA (ICMAI), CPA, CISA, or individuals with 10+ years of relevant experience and members of other recognized accounting bodies.
With the introduction of the new Global Internal Audit Standards, effective from June 2026, the CIA Challenge syllabus has been fully updated. The content tested in the three-part CIA exam is now covered in five integrated sections for the Challenge route.
These sections broadly cover governance and risk management, internal audit planning and execution, internal audit operations, assurance and advisory services, and quality and professional practices.
Regardless of whether you are a CA, CISA, or a member of any of the other 28 approved accounting bodies, all candidates now appear for one exam with the same updated syllabus.
